Epilepsy Foundation New England Achieves Accreditation for Community Health Worker (CHW) Program in MA

Why Massachusetts?
MA’s licensing authority is among the most rigorous accreditation agency in the 6 states EFNE’s CHWs reach.
“The CHWs at EFNE changed my life. Before, I thought I was all alone. Meeting my CHW was the first time, I found someone who truly understood what my day-to-day life is like – and who has the time to understand, and Help.” – Sylvia, age 43, RI
The Massachusetts Board of Certification of Community Health Workers officially accredited EFNE’s Community Health Worker (CHW) Education and Training Program this week. This certification positions EFNE as a trusted leader in the education and development of CHWs specializing in epilepsy care.
CHWs serve as essential healthcare liaisons for individuals and families affected by epilepsy. The program equips participants with the necessary skills to navigate healthcare systems, provide education, and offer support to those living with epilepsy and related conditions.
“We have seen such an amazing difference at our hospital since EFNEs have been serving our patients [2023]. I never have the time I need to answer all patients’ questions and to give them the education they need. Our CHWs are key difference-makers with patients.” Jennifer, 30-year veteran nurse, MA
Over five weeks, EFNE CHW candidates complete 100 hours of rigorous online instruction and in-person practice, covering key topics like epilepsy education, healthcare navigation, and community outreach. Guest speakers, including healthcare professionals and experienced CHWs, further enrich the learning experience by providing real-world insights and practical knowledge. The program equips CHWs to bridge the gaps between patients, healthcare providers, and community services, ensuring comprehensive support for individuals living with epilepsy.
This achievement underscores EFNE’s dedication to helping people living with epilepsy and their caregivers with the 1:1 care they need. I’m proud of our team for developing our Certification program with its100-hour curriculum and immersion/training for our Community Health Workers. Not only do they help our community today, our caring CHWs also support our busy hospitals and medical providers,” said Susan Linn, President and CEO of EFNE.
“How can we sign up to get more CHWs trained by EFNE? This program is just what we need to help our most vulnerable patients.” – Dr. T., Epileptologist, MA
EFNE’s CHW Certification program accepts enrollees and is eager to collaborate with stakeholders dedicated to improving community health.
