Epilepsy Residential Care Conference

Objective: To help educate providers in residential facilities on epilepsy-related topics.

This specialized conference is designed to equip long-term care facility staff with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to provide exceptional care to residents living with epilepsy. Individuals in long-term care settings often have complex medical needs, and seizure management requires coordinated, informed, and timely responses. This program focuses on practical, real-world strategies that staff can immediately implement to improve safety, communication, and quality of life for residents with seizure disorders.

Through expert-led sessions, interactive discussions, and case-based learning, participants will deepen their understanding of seizure recognition, emergency response, medication management, assistive technology, and collaborative communication with healthcare providers.

Key Topics Include:

Seizure First Aid Recognition & Training
Participants will learn how to recognize different types of seizures, understand when a seizure is a medical emergency, and respond appropriately using evidence-based first aid protocols. This session emphasizes hands-on training principles, documentation best practices, and how to reduce injury risk while maintaining resident dignity and safety.

Rescue Medications
This session provides clear guidance on the use of seizure rescue medications in long-term care settings. Attendees will review medication types, administration routes (including intranasal and rectal options), timing considerations, storage requirements, and documentation standards. The goal is to ensure staff feel prepared and confident when rapid intervention is required.

Seizure Alert Devices
Technology is playing an increasing role in seizure monitoring and safety. This segment explores available seizure alert and detection devices, how they function, their limitations, and considerations for implementation in long-term care environments. Participants will gain insight into how these tools can support clinical oversight while respecting resident autonomy and privacy.

Doctor Appointments & Communication
Effective communication between facility staff, residents, families, and healthcare providers is essential for optimal seizure management. This session covers preparing for neurology appointments, tracking and reporting seizure activity, advocating for residents, and strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration. Attendees will learn strategies for clear, concise communication that supports better treatment outcomes.
