Dr. Ika Noviawaty is the adult epilepsy division chief of the Boston Medical Center Epilepsy Program and Clinical Associate Professor of Neurology at Boston University. She graduated from Sun Yat Sen University of Medical Science and completed neurology training at the Medical College of Wisconsin. She subsequently completed Clinical Neurophysiology and Epilepsy fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
Dr. Noviawaty came to UMass in 2015 and successfully revamped the UMass epilepsy program and the program became NAEC level 4 accredited in 2020. The establishment of UMass comprehensive epilepsy center allowed complex epilepsy patients from central and western Massachusetts to receive their medical and surgical care locally at UMass. She also established a neurology emergency simulation program to further students, trainees, and staff inter-professional curriculum in managing neurological emergencies such as acute stroke and status epilepticus.
Dr. Noviawaty is an advocate for patients and neurologists, nationally through Neurology on the Hill and locally the President of Massachusetts Neurologic Association. Through her work in the safety net hospitals, working with limited resources, she is very familiar with epilepsy patients' psychosocial and financial needs. She would like to contribute her advocacy effort through the epilepsy foundation of New England to further establish resources more equally and more accessible for patients in rural/suburban areas.
